Public Spaces

Public spaces are canvases waiting to be filled.

Spark Newton believes in the value of placemaking: the use of plantings, public art, outdoor seating, and inviting amenities to encourage a vibrant street life, community connection, and support of local merchants.

Every year, we invest in initiatives throughout Newton to create welcoming and visually appealing places where people can gather, stroll, dine, and play. Placemaking is not a gratuitous frill, but rather a necessary component necessary for economic development and community building.

Our Gardens

Greening Newton, one garden at a time.

Our Beautification Committee designs, plants, and tends gardens in various public spaces throughout Newton.

Leo L. Levi All American Selections (AAS) Display Garden in Newton Centre

Bursting with blooms from April through October, this garden starts with 1,000+ spring bulbs, followed by hundreds of summer flowers, grown from AAS seeds in our greenhouse.

Around the City

We also plant and tend smaller gardens in Newton Centre, outdoor potted plants at the Newton Free Library, and the large garden at the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands.

Spark Newton proudly funds all planting and maintenance costs, because beautiful public spaces make communities thrive.

Al Fresco Dining

Art + Outdoor Comfort = Community Resilience

During the pandemic, Spark Newton transformed village centers with artist-painted bistro tables, murals, and jersey barriers—creating colorful, inviting outdoor dining spots. We also added lighting and shade to enhance comfort and safety.

The result?

Welcoming spaces for residents, visitors, and merchants to gather, dine, and connect—safely.

Placemaking Advocacy

Spark Newton champions increased City support for placemaking

Spark Newton has consistently advocated for more City resources to be devoted to placemaking initiatives such as a Newton Cultural District along Washington St. and the installation of decorative lighting in Newton Center. Learn more about our placemaking advocacy.
